5 Tips for Improved Respiratory Health
Did you know there are a few things you can do to improve your respiratory health? For example, you can get a lung function test. Lung function tests help doctors understand the causes of breathing problems and allows them to diagnose a condition. These types of tests can also measure the strength of your breathing muscles, the amount of air you breathe in and release, the pace of your breathing, and the ability of your lungs to deliver blood and oxygen to your body. If you are worried about your breathing, talk with your doctor about a lung function test.
You probably know that engaging in physical activity is beneficial to your overall health, but it has extra benefits for your lung health! Of course, you should always speak to your doctor before beginning a new exercise routine, but engaging in regular workouts during the week can prevent and improve respiratory issues! A simple way to ease into exercising is by going for a short walk about the neighbourhood once or twice a week.
While we know about the link between smoking and poor respiratory health, secondhand smoke can also cause similar negative side effects. Specifically, research has found that secondhand smoke and COPD are connected. Therefore, another important thing you can do to improve your respiratory health is to avoid secondhand smoke.
Eating a well-balanced diet can help you maintain a healthy weight, which benefits your lungs. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole-grains, and protein to keep your muscles strong, and give your body the energy it needs to breathe and stay active.
Finally, one of the simplest things you can do to promote good respiratory health is often the thing we forget about – take care of yourself. We know this is a broad statement and taking care of yourself looks different for everyone. However, there are a few things you can do to keep yourself healthy: try to aim for 7-9 hours of sleep a night, wash your hands frequently, and consider getting the flu shot – to name a few!
